Who doesn’t love walking into a home that just smells delightful.. welcoming… truly like home? Air Fresheners have been around a while now, but are we overlooking what they can do to our health?

Let’s be honest, the scent of any place can completely change the atmosphere, making it feel welcoming, cozy, and comforting.

However, although they may tantalize your nostrils, many commercial air fresheners and household scented products contain harmful chemicals that you’d rather not inhale.

Ingredients such as formaldehyde (yes, what they use on dead bodies for embalming), phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly found in store-bought scent products have been linked to respiratory problems, hormonal disruptions, and even cancer, according to research from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

A further study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) revealed that many popular air fresheners emit these harmful toxins while in use.

A steady stream of toxins making their way right up you and your family’s nostrils, causing respiratory conditions and disrupting hormones. You can read more about this in their detailed report here.

I know it sucks, quite frankly, because who doesn’t want a house smelling like a delicious winter wonderland at Christmas, or fresh as line-dried linen on a breezy summer’s day?

I love my favorite scents and it was a bit of a shock just how bad these air fresheners I used to love were for me too, however, I’m proud to say I’ve not bought mainstream popular scented products for the house now for over 14 years and it IS TOTALLY possible!

To keep your home safe and smelling great, here are four easy DIY non-toxic scent recipes:

1. Citrus and Herb Simmer Pot

Simmer pots are a charming way to fill your home with fresh scents, especially during gatherings or when you’re expecting guests.

This simple concoction smells crisp and refreshing.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sliced orange
  • 1 sliced lemon
  • A few sprigs of rosemary (fresh ideally)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon natural vanilla extract

How to Make:

  • Place all ingredients in a medium saucepan.
  • Add enough water to cover the ingredients.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat and let it simmer gently, adding water back in as needed. Use a saucepan lid to control scent strength.

This combination not only smells wonderful but also helps cleanse the air naturally.

2. Baking Soda Air Freshener

Baking soda is a hero ingredient when it comes to absorbing odors. Combine it with your favorite essential oils, and you’ve got yourself an effective, non-toxic room freshener.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 10-15 drops essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus blends work well)
  • Mason jar with lid
  • Small piece of fabric or cheesecloth

How to Make:

  • Pour baking soda into a mason jar.
  • Add essential oils bit by bit, stirring thoroughly.
  • Place the fabric or cheesecloth over the opening and secure with the jar lid ring.
  • Shake gently every few days to refresh the scent.

You can place these little jars of guilt-free, nose-refreshing delight discreetly around your home—bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets—and enjoy a subtle, continuous freshness. Dress up your jars with a fun macrame design!

3. DIY Reed Diffuser Air Fresheners

Reed diffusers look stylish and emit fragrance consistently, creating a spa-like ambiance at home.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup carrier oil (almond oil works well)
  • 20-30 drops essential oil of your choosing (read my post HERE about what different oils can do for you)
  • Small glass bottle or vase (upcycled perfume or old diffuser bottles)
  • Reed sticks or bamboo skewers

How to Make:

  • Mix carrier oil and essential oils in the glass container.
  • Place reed sticks into the mixture and let sit for a few hours.
  • Flip the sticks every few days to refresh the scent just as you would with a commercial brand.

Place these beautiful diffusers in common areas like your living room or office.

4. Fresh Linen Essential Oil Blend Air Freshener

This blend captures the crisp, clean aroma reminiscent of freshly laundered linens.

Ingredients:

  • 3 drops lemon essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 1 drop rosemary essential oil

How to Make:

  • Combine all the essential oils in a small glass bottle.
  • Shake well to mix.
  • Allow the blend to rest for 1–2 days to let the scents meld together.

Usage Suggestions:

  • Linen Spray: Add 10 drops of the blend to ½ cup (120 mL) of vodka or rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Shake well before each use and lightly mist over the linens in your home.
  • Air Freshener: Use the same spray as above to freshen any room in an instant.
  • Dryer Balls: Apply a few drops to your wool dryer balls before using them in the dryer for naturally scented fresh laundry.

Enjoy Naturally Fresh Air
